This flag was created in 1917 in World War I by a parent whose sons had been serving on the front lines, and soon after, this flag became a very well known symbol, being hung inside of homes and outside of windows to represent parents whose children where actively serving in the military. As a result of the flags, the Blue star mothers and Gold star mothers organizations were established not long after the flag had been recognized and adopted by the Chamber of Commerce and governor of Ohio. The flag reached peak levels of popularity during World War II, when the Department of War authorized the manufacturing of the flag.
